Elation! Defined as a feeling of immense joy, it is also the name of the youth group based at St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Mesquite, Texas by the kids who founded the group. The idea of Elation originated in the 1970’s when the predecessor to Elation, Celebration Singers, started touring the United States performing Godspell, a musical based on the gospel according to St. Matthew. In 1999, during a mission trip to Jackson, Mississippi, a group of adults and youth decided to revive what Celebration Singers had begun.
Starting that fall, Elation began meeting once a week for a time of fellowship and dedicated practice to prepare for an annual summer tour. The group consists of an average 25 to 30 youth ranging from 6th grade to seniors in high school, ages 11 to 18, all of which come from different faiths and belief structures. Besides rehearsing Godspell, the group works all year on community service projects and fundraisers to fund their tour. Elation has traveled all over the United States, from California to Florida, from Washington to New York. Elation has touched many lives, from audiences to the kids who grow under the care of the group.
The current group consists of 26 kids from Junior and Senior High from Mesquite Texas. Sharing the word of God though their presentations for the past 18 years while traveling over 60,000 miles, and worshiping with over 200 congregations. A spectacular and spiritual high for all! Watch for the Time of production to be posted! Will be an evening performance.
